우울증은 기분의 저하가 심하고 지속적으로 진행되면서 즐거움이나 흥미가 상실되는 질환으로, 심한 경우에는 죄의식이나 무가치감을 가지게 되고 판단력이 저하되어, 자살시도, 사망에 이를 수 있다. 저의 연구실은 국내 우울증과 자살의 현황 연구 및 횡문화적 비교, 우울증과 트라우마의 관계, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)를 포함한 바이오마커 연구, 단측전기자극요법(unilateral electroconvulsive therapy) 연구, 우울증과 자살예방에 대한 임상시험 등을 진행하고 있다. 우울증과 자살의 생물학적 기전 규명과 새로운biomarker, 신치료방법 및 신약물 개발을 목표로 연구를 진행하고 있다.
